Persolanised Tutoring

I use a variety of resources and techniques gained over 15+ years experience in both private and classroom teaching.

Preparation is the key for a good piano lesson. I plan each and all of my lessons, set up reachable goals making sure the pupil understands these before moving on to the next section in the lesson.

In each lesson I intend to cover as many areas as possible, touching on some music theory, adding a variety of musicianship skills, aural training, and I use a diversity of materials such as flashcards and small percussion instruments. Most importantly I encourage and I give the pupil the tools to make music from the get go.

The time spent practising at home is 90% of the job, I make sure my pupils know how to face and solve musical difficulties at home that will arise as they improve. How to practice at home is the key!

Why you may want me as your teacher

I pride myself on presenting a balanced approach to music instruction, including not only learning to play the piano, but also understanding the way music is put together, appreciating the relationship between music and history, improving your technical ability to play well, and developing your own creative voice through improvising, arranging, and composing.

Why some may not want me as a teacher

My personal musical taste is classical music. I include a lot of popular music in my instruction to add interest and present a complete picture of music, but those who want to just learn one song after another, who wish to learn piano primarily by rote, or wish to study jazz piano, will find better teachers elsewhere.
